Fire Safety Policy

Policy statement

Jack and Jill Community Preschool understands the importance of fire safety and keeping everyone safe. This policy is designed to ensure that anyone who enters the building is kept safe and if there is a fire, everyone knows what to do.

There are trained Fire Marshals at Jack and Jill Community Preschool and these are:

Elizabeth Wilkins

Joosila Bosley

Nicola Taylor

These Fire Marshals have undergone Fire Safety training.

At Jack and Jill Community Preschool we have taken into consideration the fire safety regulations and ensured all our equipment, premises and fire safety equipment are regularly checked to make sure they are in line with these regulations. Each week the Fire Marshals check the following:

Fire Extinguisher and Blankets are in date;

Smoke alarms are fully functional;

All fire doors are closed, well-maintained, and free from obstruction;

Preschool Team members are aware of the whereabouts of fire equipment if needed;

Any fire exits/escape routes are kept clear (this is done daily as part of the morning risk assessment).

A fire drill takes place once a term to ensure everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire. These are recorded in the fire safety folder, alongside staff and children numbers, time, and recommendations to improve.

The register is completed thrice a day at Jack and Jill Community Preschool so that the preschool team is aware of when children have entered and left the building. This means that the team can keep an informed log of which children are present at certain times of the day. In the event of a fire, this register is taken outside and checked against each child present to ensure all children are safely out of the building.

Jack and Jill Community Preschool operates a strict no smoking/vaping policy when in or around the setting for all staff, parents and visitors. There is a separate no smoking/vaping policy for more information.

Procedures

  • If a fire is discovered, a whistle is blown to alert all the Preschool team
  • If you are a member of the Management Team, pick up the register and gate fob, and evacuate all of the children and staff from the building via the nearest fire exit to the fire safe location: The Happy Space
  • If you are a team member, assist the Management Team in evacuating all children swiftly and calmly, supporting any needs of children, using your relationship and knowledge of all children to evaluate who may need extra support during this process
  • If you are the Fire Marshal, pick up the Preschool phone and first aid bag, put on a hi-vis vest and exit the building via the nearest fire exit after closing all windows and doors and checking (where safe to do so) that all rooms are empty, to the fire safe location:  The Happy Space
  • Once out of the building DO NOT ENTER THE BUILDING AGAIN
  • Take the register to ensure all children and staff are present
  • If you are a member of the Management Team/Fire Marshal, call the emergency services and report anyone who is unaccounted for
  • Once the emergency services have been informed, call St Edmunds Catholic Primary School to inform them of the fire
  • Wait for the emergency services to arrive and inspect the building – do NOT go back in until they deem it  safe to do so
  • It is important to remember that you do not stop to collect any belongings, do not attempt to fight the fire, and do not go back inside the building for any person (child or adult)
  • If you are unable to safely evacuate the building, stay where you are and keep calm. Shut any doors leading to the fire and block any gaps with towels/rugs. Try to contact another member of the team so they know where you are

I have read and understood this policy and will adhere to it as part of my daily practice
